A convicted child sex offender has been jailed for a further 10 years after being found guilty of additional sexual offences against the same two victims. Nigel Collier, 68, from Hull, was sentenced at Plymouth Crown Court on July 31 after a jury convicted him of six counts of sexual assault by penetration. The offences, which took place in Plymouth, involved two girls who had also been victims in an earlier prosecution against Collier. Collier was previously jailed in 2017 for four years after pleading guilty to three counts of sexual abuse involving the two victims. However, following that conviction, police received further information which led detectives to reopen enquiries and investigate additional offending that had not formed part of the original prosecution.
New evidence led to second prosecution
Detectives gathered further evidence and Collier was subsequently charged with six additional offences involving the same victims. Following a five-day trial at Plymouth Crown Court, he was found guilty on June 25, 2026. He returned to court on July 31, when he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The judge described the offences as extremely serious and said the victims had suffered significant and lasting harm as a result of the abuse. Investigating officers praised the victims for supporting a second investigation and prosecution years after the original case. Detective Constable Cheryl Kearton, the investigating officer, said:
“The bravery shown by the victims throughout this process cannot be overstated. “Thanks to the further information provided, we were able to build additional evidence and ensure the offender was held accountable for the full extent of his crimes.”
Police said the case highlights the importance of victims and witnesses continuing to provide information even where an offender has previously been convicted.
