Three lucky residents escaped unscathed after a fierce fire ripped through the loft conversion of a terraced house on Chudleigh Road, Brockley on Monday evening.

Blaze Breaks Out in Brockley Loft

The London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene just after 7pm on 26 May, deploying four engines and around 25 firefighters from Lewisham, Forest Hill, Lee Green, and New Cross stations.

Firefighters found the loft conversion badly damaged by flames. Fortunately, the three occupants had already escaped before the blaze was tackled, with no injuries reported.

Cause Confirmed: Unattended Oil Lamp Sparks Fire

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson revealed the fire was accidental, caused by an oil lamp left unattended.

In a stark warning, the Brigade reminded the public to follow strict safety measures with candles and oil burners to avoid similar disasters.

“Never leave candles, incense sticks, or oil burners unattended – this includes Diya lamps often used during worship or festivals,” the spokesperson warned. “Always extinguish naked flames before leaving a room or going to bed. Use heat-resistant holders on stable surfaces and keep away from flammable items like curtains, papers, or furniture.”

Essential Candle and Oil Burner Safety Tips

  • Never leave candles or oil burners unattended.
  • Always put out all flames before sleeping or leaving a room.
  • Use proper holders and heat-resistant bases.
  • Keep them away from curtains, clothing, papers, and soft furnishings.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Beware that tea lights can melt plastic surfaces – use with caution.
