Smoke clouds village as fire rages at recycling yard

A huge fire broke out early this morning at the recycling plant on Gipping Lane, Great Blakenham, near Ipswich. Dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene to tackle the relentless blaze that is sending thick, choking smoke across the village.

Urgent safety warning from fire boss

Andy Smith, Area Manager at Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, tweeted just after 5 a.m.: “@SuffolkFire is on the scene of a large recycling plant fire on Gipping Lane in Great Blakenham. Due to the high level of smoke, please keep your windows and doors closed.”

This isn’t the first time the site has gone up in flames. Last month, firefighters battled for over six hours to put out a huge fire at the Sackers recycling yard, which saw 300 tonnes of scrap metal and car shells ablaze, according to the BBC.
