London hit with a high air pollution alert amid freezing fog and traffic fumes!
City Chokes on Toxic Air
Since Saturday 21st, Londoners have been breathing moderate levels of nasty air pollution. The culprit? Cold, still, and foggy weather trapping vehicle emissions close to the ground. The city’s poor air dispersion is turning the capital’s atmosphere into a pollution hotspot.
Warnings Blast Across TfL and Schools
The high pollution alert has been sent to schools and borough councils. Expect to see warnings flashing across the TfL network too, urging everyone to take care.
Sadiq Khan: “Toxic Air Is Our Enemy”
“We know how dangerous toxic air is for Londoners, which is why I’m doing everything in my power to combat it,” said Mayor Sadiq Khan. “Alongside these freezing temperatures, we’re expecting high pollution levels on Tuesday.”
“Following Imperial College London’s latest forecast, I’m issuing a ‘high’ air pollution alert. This proves why we must expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone across London to cut these harmful emissions.”
“Over the next few days, we all need to exercise caution. Please look out for each other by walking, cycling, or using public transport. Avoid unnecessary car trips, switch off engines when idling, and don’t burn garden waste. These steps are vital, especially for vulnerable Londoners.”
