Sheffield United in mourning after midfielder Maddy Cusack’s tragic death
Shock at Bramall Lane as star midfielder passes away
Sheffield United is reeling after the sudden loss of midfielder Maddy Cusack, aged just 27. A key player since 2019, Cusack made history by becoming the first woman to hit 100 appearances for the club’s women’s team last season. Her death has left the club shattered.
Cusack wasn’t just a footballer; she also worked as a marketing executive for the Women’s Championship outfit. Her presence was felt both on and off the pitch.
Tributes pour in from club and football world
Sheffield United CEO Stephen Bettis spoke of the overwhelming grief at Bramall Lane:
“This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane. Maddy had a unique position within several teams here and was popular with everyone she met. Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family – she will be sadly missed.”
The club is offering full support to Maddy’s family, friends, and colleagues. Former clubs Birmingham, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest have also paid emotional tributes.
The Football Association is in contact with Sheffield United and providing support during this dark time. FA Women’s Football director Baroness Sue Campbell added:
“On behalf of the FA, the Lionesses, the Women’s Super League, and the Women’s Championship, our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Maddy’s family, friends, teammates, and Sheffield United. Maddy represented England at youth level and we will honour her memory at the right moment.”

Tottenham boss Postecoglou opens up on fairy-tale Premier League journey
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou revealed his shock at landing the Spurs job in a recent BBC interview. The 58-year-old, who previously managed Celtic, has masterminded Spurs’ rise to second place with an exciting brand of football.
“I never thought I would get here, to be honest. Not due to my ability, but because no one was looking this way. To manage one of the world’s biggest clubs – Celtic and now Tottenham – it’s come late in my career but it just took someone to look beyond the norm,” he said.
Postecoglou also shared his fascinating journey from a refugee camp to representing Australia, plus his leadership style and ambitions for Spurs to compete for trophies with attack-minded football.
