Fatal Crash Shuts M23 and Part of M25 in Both Directions
A deadly collision has slammed the M23 and a section of the M25, shutting both motorways in both directions. The crash, involving three vehicles near Horley, claimed the life of a motorbike rider who was thrown from his bike.
Emergency Teams On Scene After Tragic Crash
Paramedics and an air ambulance rushed to the scene, but sadly, the rider was pronounced dead at once. Surrey Police and Highways officers are working to clear the wreckage and keep stranded motorists safe.
Thousands remain stuck in gridlock on the M23 and M25. Drivers are urged to stay in their cars and avoid walking on the carriageway.
Long Road Closures and Major Diversions
The M23 is shut between Junctions 8 and 9 in both directions. The northbound carriageway remains closed while incident screens are erected. The southbound stretch faces a lengthy closure for a full crash investigation.
Highways England advises southbound drivers to follow the ‘Hollow Diamond’ diversion:
- Take the M25 clockwise to Junction 6 (A22)
- Follow the A22 southbound for nearly 9 miles to A264 junction
- Turn right onto A264, continue 5 miles to M23 Junction 10
Northbound traffic should follow the ‘Solid Square’ diversion:
- Exit M23 at Junction 10
- Take A264 northbound for 5 miles
- Turn left onto A22 north for 9 miles to M25 Junction 6
Heavy delays are expected both on the motorways and diversion routes. Authorities warn the closures could last for hours.
Police Investigate Fatal Crash
Specialist Surrey Police collision investigators are working alongside roads policing teams to piece together what happened. Traffic within the closed section will be turned around and sent back to Junction 8.
More updates to follow as the situation develops.
