Calais Migrant Tragedy: 2 Dead, 53 Rescued in Dawn Rescue Drama

At dawn on Sunday, August 11, 2024, a migrant boat ran into deadly trouble off Calais amid dense fog. A massive rescue was launched by the Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (CROSS) Gris-Nez. Two people died, but heroic crews saved 53 others from the Channel’s icy grip.

Distress Call Sparks Rapid Response

CROSS Gris-Nez got a chilling call: migrants were in the water. The French Navy’s Dauphin helicopter from Le Touquet scrambled fast despite thick fog reducing visibility. The crew found the sinking boat and began urgent rescues. Sadly, one victim was pulled out unresponsive and later died in Boulogne-sur-Mer hospital.

Multiple Rescue Units Join the Lifesaving Effort

  • The Minck rescue ship, fresh from another mission, saved 36 survivors—several with petrol burns.
  • The SNSM all-weather dinghy Notre-Dame-de-Risban picked up four people, including one unconscious victim who could not be revived.
  • The French Navy’s Cormoran patrol boat and Boulogne-sur-Mer’s Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation team (SMUR) provided vital support.
  • Britain’s Border Force Volunteer from the Dover MRCC rescued 14 more and transferred them to safety.

All survivors were brought ashore in Calais for urgent medical care.

Search Winds Down But Vigilance Urged

Search teams combed a wide area around the disaster site well into the day. By midday, the maritime prefect called off directed searches, but local vessels were warned to stay alert. This tragic incident highlights the human cost of the ongoing migrant crisis in the English Channel, with fresh arrivals expected to keep pressure on rescue services.

Authorities are set to release further updates as the situation develops.
