June 2023 Set to Smash UK Heat Records

June 2023 is on course to become the hottest June ever recorded in the UK, smashing a temperature record that dates back to 1884.

Despite a few days of cooler weather forecast, the Met Office warns it won’t be enough to stop this June from overtaking previous heat legends like June 1940 and the famously scorching summer of 1976.

Unrelenting Heat Waves Push Temperatures Sky-High

Met Office expert Mike Kendon revealed: “With just a handful of days near average, June 2023 is provisionally the UK’s hottest June on record for both mean and maximum temperatures.”

June kicked off under high pressure, delivering dry, settled weather and sunshine. But as that high pressure faded, warm, muggy air swept across the country, driving temperatures as high as 32.2°C—the hottest recorded so far this month.

“The real shocker is the persistence of the heat,” Kendon added. “Temperatures have hovered above 25°C for at least two weeks and hit between 28°C to 30°C multiple times. Normally, we’d expect highs in the high teens or low 20s at this time of year.”

Climate Change: Turning Up the Heat

The rising mercury isn’t just bad luck — it’s a product of climate change. Heatwaves and record-breaking high temperatures are becoming more common and intense across the UK because of global warming.

Kendon explained: “The UK has always seen warm spells, but climate change amps up the frequency and ferocity of these events. That’s why we see more broken temperature records year after year, like the UK’s hottest annual temperature in 2022.”

He pointed out that the warmest months on record across the calendar include many recent years like 2019 (Feb), 2018 (May), 2015 (Dec), 2012 (Mar), 2011 (Apr and Nov), 2006 (July) — and now 2023 (June). This pattern shows clear signs of our changing climate and its impact on extreme heat.

Final Word on June’s Record-Breaking Heat Coming Soon

The Met Office will officially confirm June 2023’s place in history on Monday, 3 July. The update will include detailed data on regional records, rainfall, and sunshine totals.

But one thing’s certain: June 2023 is already making waves as the UK’s hottest June on record — a blazing symbol of a warming climate.
