Yellow Heat Alert Hits London and South East
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has slapped a yellow heat health alert on London and the South East. From Monday, a scorching multi-day heatwave will bake the region with temperatures soaring close to 30°C.
The Met Office warns there will be little relief overnight, raising serious concerns for vulnerable groups like older adults, young children, and anyone with pre-existing health issues.
Weather Forecast: Scorching Days Ahead
- Monday, 11 August: Clear skies and sunshine, highs of 29°C, with a muggy overnight low of 19°C. UV levels high. Sunrise at 5:40am and sunset at 8:30pm.
- Tuesday, 12 August: More sunny intervals, high of 29°C and low of 19°C overnight.
- Wednesday, 13 August: Heat peaks at 30°C with persistent warmth overnight again.
UKHSA Issues Urgent Health Warnings
The UKHSA is urging Londoners to stay cool and hydrated, especially during 11am to 3pm — the hottest part of the day. A spokesperson said: “Extended periods of high temperatures and warm nights pose serious health risks, particularly for those in poorly ventilated housing or with underlying conditions.”
Key advice includes:
- Keep curtains closed in sun-facing rooms during the day.
- Use fans and sip water regularly to stay hydrated.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours.
- Check in on elderly neighbours or family members.
NHS and Care Services Brace for Impact
Care homes, community health providers, and outreach teams have been told to activate their heatwave contingency plans. They must safeguard those most at risk.
The yellow alert will last at least until Thursday but could be ramped up if temperatures climb further.
