Man jailed for over 3 years for offences including controlling coercive behaviour and strangulation in Hampshire

A man has been sentenced to 38 months imprisonment for coercive controlling behaviour, intentional strangulation and assault in Waterlooville and New Milton.
Following an eight-day trial, a jury found him guilty on all counts, and he appeared again at the same court on Friday 20 February for sentencing.

The court heard how Chandler had used coercive, threatening and violent behaviour to control all aspects of the woman’s life. This included monitoring her when she went out and setting time limits on how long she could go out for, frequently checking up on her by phoning her. He controlled her use of her own phone and checked it to determine how she had used it.

Chandler dictated what the woman could wear and what clothing she could buy. He also accused her of looking at other men, prevented her from speaking to other men and instructed her to undergo breast surgery to alter her appearance in front of other men.

He also made threats to damage her house and property, as well threating to damage property belonging to her family members.

Chandler’s behaviour even extended to controlling how the woman ran her business; he changed the name of the business, prevented the business from having any male customers, controlled what services could be provided, forced changes to the signage and appearance of the business, forced the deletion of social media accounts, and damaged property belonging to the business.

The court also heard how Chandler had demeaned and undermined the woman by compelling her to degrade herself in front of her business clients.

As well as his controlling and threatening behaviour, the jury found Chandler guilty of physical violence, having intentionally strangled her on 29 March 2025 and having assaulted her between 23 June 2024 and 30 June 2025 by strangling her, grabbing her head, slapping her, pulling her hair, and restraining her.

Detective Constable Andrew Mason of the Havant and Waterlooville Criminal Investigations Department said, “To see Chandler sentenced to over three years imprisonment is a result I am happy with, as he deserves to be behind bars for the physical, emotional, mental and financial abuse he has put the victim through in this case.

“The lengths to which Chandler went to control the victim in all aspects of her life is both shocking and abhorrent. His behaviour has caused serious alarm and distress to the victim, which has understandably had a substantial adverse effect on her.

“The physical violence that the victim has endured at his hands, including being subjected on multiple occasions to being strangled, is horrendous, and a real testament to how dangerous a man Chandler is.

“I would like to commend the victim for her strength and bravery throughout the investigation and court process, and thank her for her continued support in helping us see Chandler be put behind bars. We could not have achieved this result without her courage and determination to see justice be done.”

Battery Blaze at Fleet Maintenance Centre

The blaze erupted just before 4pm on Monday at the fleet maintenance centre located at the HIWFRS complex on Leigh Road, which is shared with Hampshire Constabulary.

A HIWFRS spokesperson said: “Fast acting fleet maintenance staff immediately called 999 and crews from Eastleigh and St Mary’s fire stations were mobilised to the incident.”
“While their brave actions helped contain the blaze, we urge everyone to call 999 and wait outside rather than tackling fires themselves.”

  • Kent’s Asylum Seeker Bill Shoots Up – Now Highest in UK

Kent’s Asylum Seeker Bill Shoots Up – Now Highest in UK

Kent County Council’s asylum seeker costs have tripled in just five years, hitting a staggering £41.6 million – the highest bill of any region in the country. New research from the TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA) reveals a jaw-dropping 319% rise since 2019-20.

    Kent’s Soaring Asylum Costs

Kent’s £41.6m social care bill dwarfs every other local authority. The £31.7m increase in five years is driven by rising support needs for both adults and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC).

Council leader Linden Kemkaran has blasted the government’s “abysmal” border control, blaming successive administrations for the rising financial burden. She’s called on Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood for extra funding to cope, especially for young adults aged 21-25 who get zero government support despite Kent’s legal duty to care for them.

    Unaccompanied Children Piling Up

Kent is legally bound to take in all unaccompanied asylum-seeking children arriving on its shores. These kids are either housed locally or moved to other councils under the national transfer scheme. The number of such children has quadrupled to 16,000 over the past decade.

Cllr Kemkaran said: “When unaccompanied children rock up on our shores, we are legally obliged to put them in our children’s care services and look after them…up to the age of 25. Our staff cope brilliantly…but successive governments have failed abysmally to secure our borders.”

With small boats crossing the Channel expected to increase as the weather warms, the council braces for even more strain, mostly men, but with some children who become Kent’s responsibility immediately.

    Taxpayers Pick Up the Tab

The TPA report highlights that national local authority social care spending on asylum seekers has doubled since 2019-20, reaching £744 million in 2024-25. Rising adult care demands and the growing number of unaccompanied children are the main drivers.

Social care covers services like interpretation, healthcare, housing, education, and legal aid. For children in care, costs include accommodation and placements. Kent receives around £1,000 per week for under-18s and £270 weekly for 18-21-year-olds—but nothing beyond age 21, leaving a funding gap.

Kent Tops the Bill List, Others Follow

    • Kent: £41.6 million
    • Hampshire: £23.9 million
    • Manchester: £23.2 million
    • Surrey: £22.6 million
    • Bristol: £19.2 million
    • Essex: £15.2 million

TPA researcher Anne Strickland warned: “The escalating costs…are a ticking time bomb in town hall budgets, with residents suffering. Taxpayers have watched governments fail to get a grip, knowing they will ultimately foot the bill.”

She added: “With councils helpless, urgent Whitehall action is essential to stop this migration crisis.”

    Government Response

The Home Office said: “Local authorities have a statutory duty to support unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and care leavers, and we are committed to working closely with them. The Home Office already provides additional funding contributions to help local authorities meet support costs.”

  • Southampton Hospitals in Crisis: Appointments Cancelled and Evacuations After Fire

Southampton Hospitals in Crisis: Appointments Cancelled and Evacuations After Fire

Chaos hit Southampton’s healthcare twice in two days. After a massive fire at Southampton General Hospital’s endoscopy unit, forcing the evacuation of 200 patients, Royal South Hants Hospital also faced an evacuation just after midday today. Appointments are cancelled, and disruption looks set to continue as investigations and repairs get underway.

Fire Sparks Massive Evacuation at Southampton General

On Sunday morning, a blaze ripped through the hospital’s endoscopy suite, destroying the entire unit and its equipment. More than 100 firefighters battled the flames, which left large sections of the west wing cordoned off. Around 200 patients were rushed to safety, with some moved to other hospitals across the region.

University Hospital Southampton’s chief medical officer, Paul Grundy, described it as “the worst fire we’ve attended at the hospital.” The hospital declared a major incident, and some wards remain closed for cleaning and safety checks.

“We’ve obviously got a very challenging time ahead managing patients that need endoscopy,” Grundy said.

Second Hospital Evacuated as Alarms Sound at Royal South Hants

Just two days after the fire, Royal South Hants Hospital was evacuated after alarms blared at around midday. Patients and visitors were ushered outside and told to wait—some for up to 30 minutes—before being allowed back in. The cause remains unknown, but Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they did not attend the incident.

One patient said: “Everyone was evacuated just before 12. There wasn’t a lot of information, even the doctor didn’t seem to know what was going on. Then we all went back in and had my appointment as normal.”

Disruptions Continue: Emergency Department Closed and Appointments Cancelled

    • Southampton General’s emergency department remains closed for most patients except life or limb-threatening emergencies.
    • A significant number of elective surgeries and outpatient appointments are cancelled for the second day.
    • More than 100 hospital beds remain out of action, with displaced patients cared for across the area.
    • Personal belongings of some patients, including mobile phones, were lost in the chaos.

“We want to reassure relatives that a dedicated team is working to recover belongings when it’s safe,” a hospital spokesperson said.

Local MP Praises ‘Heroic’ Hospital Staff Amid Fire Crisis

Satvir Kaur, MP for Southampton Test, paid tribute to the staff and emergency services battling the blaze and handling the evacuations.

“No one was hurt or killed thanks to the swift response of heroic hospital staff and our emergency services,” she said. “I am staying in close contact with the hospital trust and will continue to support them through this unprecedented situation.”

If you’ve been affected or require assistance, the MP urges you to contact her office at [email protected] or call 02382 546 357.

The Road Ahead: Hospital Recovery in Progress

With fire investigators still on site and cordons in place, the hospital faces weeks of disruption. Some wards in the west wing have reopened after intensive cleaning and ventilation, but major repairs are expected. Staff continue working tirelessly to restore normal services amid challenging circumstances.

Major Hospital Fire Sparks Massive Emergency Response

A huge fire broke out at Southampton General Hospital early Sunday morning, triggering a major incident and calling in over 100 firefighters to tackle the blaze.

    Fire Erupts in Endoscopy Unit

The fire started around 5:30am in the hospital’s west wing endoscopy unit. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Staff quickly evacuated around 200 patients from the affected areas to safe zones within the hospital.

The hospital has urged visitors to stay away and cancelled all outpatient appointments scheduled for the day. Its emergency department is diverting all but the most serious cases away to other facilities.

Firefighters Contain Blaze, but Smoke Impact is Significant

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sent more than 110 firefighters at the peak of the incident. By 10am, they had the fire under control but remained on site to damp down and clearthe  smoke.

“Many of us, including myself, had a slightly rude awakening this morning and were called into the hospital, all hands on deck, to deal with what is a major incident,” said Dr Paul Grundy, Chief Medical Officer.

“The situation has been hugely challenging but we’ve held meetings every half hour with teams both inside and outside the hospital.”

The fire seems to have stayed contained to the room of origin, but the smoke spread throughout the floor, causing significant disruption.

    Road Closures and Ongoing Operations

Emergency services closed roads around the Coxford Road hospital entrance. Patients have been moved to the hospital lobby and other safe areas as crews worked to clear the smoke.

Authorities advise anyone needing medical care to use other local urgent treatment centres, such as Royal South Hants Hospital or Lymington New Forest Hospital.

“The fire is out and we are scaling down operations now, but crews will remain on scene for the foreseeable future,” said Group Manager Larry Mackrell.

“At this stage, we don’t know what caused the fire.”

  • Fire crews respond to electrical fire at Southampton General Hospital as West Wing evacuated and roads closed

Fire crews respond to electrical fire at Southampton General Hospital as West Wing evacuated and roads closed

Firefighters were called to an electrical fire at Southampton General Hospital overnight, triggering the evacuation of patients, the closure of part of the site’s West Wing, and significant disruption on surrounding roads.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews attended the incident at Southampton General Hospital after reports of a fire affecting the Endoscopy Department in the hospital’s West Wing.

The fire is understood to have broken out during the early hours, with hospital staff and emergency responders working swiftly to move patients to safe areas. Several patients were relocated to other wards as a precaution, including vulnerable patients from specialist units.

One patient inside the hospital described the scene as “crazy” as staff worked under pressure to ensure patient safety. Writing on Facebook, she said:

“I’m in hospital — there’s been a fire on West Wing. It’s crazy here at the moment. They had to bring people onto the cancer ward but are making sure we’re safe from any infections. The staff are run off their feet.”

Another hospital visitor said routine care was heavily disrupted, with day surgeries affected by the evacuation.

“My husband was due a day operation but they hadn’t phoned to cancel. He went in and was more or less straight back out as the day ward was full of West Wing patients. I really feel for the staff today.”

Police closed part of Coxford Road during the response, causing traffic delays around the hospital campus. Motorists reported being unable to leave the drop-off area and urged others to avoid the area if possible.

    One resident wrote:

“Part of Coxford Road is closed by police. I’ve just dropped someone off and now I’m stuck in the drop-off point as it seems you can’t get out the other end. Avoid.”

Another local added that while the road was clear early in the morning, disruption was expected to worsen later in the day as commuters returned home.

By mid-morning, the fire was confirmed as extinguished, but the West Wing remained closed while assessments continued. The cause of the electrical fire has not yet been formally confirmed, and investigations are expected to take place.

Hospital management has not yet issued a full statement on service disruption, but patients are being advised that some appointments and procedures may be delayed.

Emergency services have praised hospital staff for their rapid response during the incident, which ensured all patients were safely evacuated without reports of serious injury.

    This is a developing story.

Tragically, a dog was discovered dead amid the flames.

    Toddler Dies After Hospital Stay

Jayla-Jean McLaren was taken to the hospital on August 1, 2025, suffering from severe injuries. Despite medical efforts, she died 48 hours later on August 3.

    Police Charge Woman with Murder

Hampshire Police have charged Samara Jay Glover, from Newport on the Isle of Wight, with murder and causing or allowing the death of a child. She remains in custody.

A 31-year-old man from Newport was also arrested on suspicion of murder but has since been bailed with conditions until April 27.

    Investigation Ongoing as Community Mourns

Detective Chief Inspector Gemma Hunter said: “We understand that cases such as this are incredibly concerning and upsetting. However, we kindly ask that you do not speculate on this case, as it could potentially impact any future court proceedings. We will provide further updates on this investigation when appropriate.”

    Heartbroken Family and Vigil

Jayla-Jean’s devastated parents, Jay and Shay McLaren, led around 70 mourners at a vigil held on August 7, 2025. Loved ones gathered at Church Litten Park in Newport to lay flowers, balloons, teddies, and photographs beneath a tree with pink leaves in memory of their ‘princess.’

Mrs McLaren took to social media to urge the community to “make Newport pink for our beautiful little girl who gained her wings on Sunday,” asking people to create a lasting tribute.

“Mummy and daddy and nanny will always love you. Fly high, princess,” she said in a heartfelt statement.

  • Ex-Home Secretary Drops Tory Colours

    Ex-Home Secretary Drops Tory Colours

Suella Braverman, former Conservative Home Secretary, has shocked Westminster by defecting to Reform UK. The right-wing politician declared, “It feels like I have come home” at a swanky 1 event hosted by none other than Nigel Farage.

The announcement came today at a Veterans for Reform gathering, where Farage proudly unveiled Braverman as the latest high-profile Tory to jump ship.

    Another Blow for the Tories

Braverman’s defection follows hot on the heels of Robert Jenrick, her ex-deputy at the Home Office, who also switched allegiance to Reform UK just a week ago.

She confirmed she will continue to represent her Havant and Waterlooville seat in Hampshire under her new party’s banner, rejecting calls to trigger a by-election.

    Long-Running Rumours Finally Confirmed

For months, whispers circulated about Braverman’s political loyalties. Last year, she sparked speculation by appearing alongside Reform UK’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, at a press conference advocating for an electoral pact between the two parties.

In a twist, Braverman’s husband, Rael, left Reform earlier this year after the party publicly criticised her government record — highlighting tensions within their camp.

The Changing Face of UK Politics

Braverman’s exit signposts growing unrest on the Tory right. With key figures defecting, the Conservative Party risks being left with a shrinking core. Jabs from the public are already flying, with one commenter noting, “At this rate, there will only be Kemi Badenoch left in the Conservative Party! Talk about ‘Billy no mates’ 😂”

Her arrival gives Reform UK another clear boost ahead of the next general election, injecting fresh star power into Farage’s insurgent party.

    Maddison Wilson’s Tragic End

Maddison Wilson, 37, previously known as Mark Anthony Charles Wilson, underwent gender reassignment surgery in November 2024. She was due in court on 26 February 2025, charged with raping a girl under 13 and causing a girl to engage in sexual activity in Hull. She also faced charges of sexual assault and causing a boy to engage in sexual activity in Southampton.

    Distress Call Before Death

On 13 February 2025, Maddison’s brother, Wolfie Wilson, received a panicked call from her. She sounded “panicked and breathing hard and heavy,” saying a neighbour had smashed her window.

    Coroner Details Harrowing Final Hours

Maddison was found dead on 14 February at Castle Field, just hours after the attack on her home. Hampshire Senior Coroner Christopher Wilkinson said the incident caused her to flee “in a very frightened and distressed state.”

“She took her own life whilst suffering acute distress and chronic depression,” said Mr Wilkinson. He also noted that publicising case details led to victimisation over both the alleged offences and her lifestyle, which made her property a target.
