Southampton Hospitals in Crisis: Two Evacuations and Chaos in Just Days!

Blazing Fire Triggers Mass Evacuation at Southampton General

Sunday morning saw chaos erupt at Southampton General Hospital when a fierce fire gutted the endoscopy unit. The blaze destroyed the entire suite and vital equipment. Over 100 firefighters struggled to control the flames, forcing the evacuation of around 200 patients. Some were rushed to nearby hospitals as large parts of the west wing were sealed off.

University Hospital Southampton’s chief medical officer Paul Grundy called it “the worst fire we’ve attended at the hospital.” A major incident was declared, and several wards remain closed for safety checks and deep cleaning.

“We’ve obviously got a very challenging time ahead managing patients that need endoscopy,” said Grundy.

Royal South Hants Hospital Evacuated Amid Alarm Scare

The turmoil didn’t end there. Just two days later, Royal South Hants Hospital faced its own evacuation after alarms blared shortly after midday. Patients and visitors were hurried outside and kept waiting up to 30 minutes before being let back in. The cause is still unknown, but Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed they were not called to the scene.

“Everyone was evacuated just before 12. There wasn’t a lot of information, even the doctor didn’t seem to know what was going on. Then we all went back in and had my appointment as normal,” said one patient.

Appointments Cancelled and Emergency Dept Shut

  • Southampton General’s emergency department remains closed except for life or limb-threatening emergencies.
  • Hundreds of elective surgeries and outpatient appointments have been cancelled for the second day running.
  • More than 100 hospital beds are out of action, with patients relocated across the region.
  • Some patients lost personal belongings like mobile phones in the chaos.

A hospital spokesperson reassured relatives: “A dedicated team is working to recover belongings as soon as it is safe to do so.”

MP Hails ‘Heroic’ Hospital Staff

Southampton Test MP Satvir Kaur praised the hospital teams and emergency services for their swift response during this crisis.

“No one was hurt or killed thanks to the heroic hospital staff and emergency services acting fast. I’m in close contact with the hospital trust and will keep supporting them through this unprecedented situation,” Kaur said.

If affected, contact the MP’s office at [email protected] or call 02382 546 357.

Long Road to Recovery Ahead for Southampton Hospitals

Fire investigators remain on site as hospital staff carry on with cleanup and repairs. Some wards in the west wing have reopened after extensive ventilation and cleaning, but major rebuilding lies ahead. The hospitals face weeks of disruption despite the staff’s tireless efforts.
