Women’s Clothes Found in Field Spark New Twist in Gaia Pope Search
A police cordon is up after items of women’s clothing were found near Swanage, sparking fresh hope in the ongoing search for missing 19-year-old Gaia Pope.
Clothes discovered near coastal path
A member of the public made the grim discovery at 10.28am today (Thursday 16 November) in a field north of the coastal path near Swanage. The clothes’ owner is still unknown, but Dorset Police have told Gaia’s heartbroken family.
Gaia vanished on the afternoon of Tuesday 7 November. She was last seen near Morrison Road wearing grey-and-white leggings, white trainers, and a red checked shirt.
Police launch thorough search
Senior Investigating Officer Neil Devoto of Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team vowed a “full and thorough” search of the field and surrounding land will take place following the discovery.
“We have seized the clothing and investigations will now be carried out to identify who they belong to,” said Devoto. “Our thoughts remain with Gaia’s family at this very difficult time.”
Massive search effort still underway
- Dorset Search and Rescue teams, the coastguard, NPAS helicopter, and specialist units from neighbouring forces have scoured the Swanage coastline and countryside since Gaia disappeared.
- On Monday 13 November, police executed search warrants at two Swanage addresses, with three vehicles seized.
- A 19-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman from Swanage, both known to Gaia, were arrested on suspicion of murder but later released under investigation.
Police appeal for info
Devoto urged anyone with information about Gaia’s whereabouts or suspicious activity near Morrison Road and Priests Way from the day Gaia vanished to come forward immediately.
