Rape Crisis Scotland has joined the chorus of critics, condemning Glasgow United’s plans. The charity expressed deep concern about offering Goodwillie a platform to relaunch his career amid serious allegations. Since the court case, Goodwillie has struggled to find a club, facing backlash from sponsors, fans, and sports figures alike.
Council Leader Threatens to Cut Club’s Home Ground Access
Despite the controversy, Goodwillie was given a trial at Glasgow United, a ninth-tier outfit in the West of Scotland Third Division. He even featured in a recent friendly match. A club spokesman insisted Goodwillie “deserves a chance” at redemption.
“He was found to be a rapist in court and has shown no remorse for more than 12 years,” said Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken. “Signing him sends a terrible message about the safety of women and girls in sport and our community.”
Aitken branded any move to sign Goodwillie as “outrageous” and “wholly at odds” with the values tied to community facilities like the Greenfield Football Centre.
Council Ready to End Deal With Glasgow United
The council leader has ordered officers to review their agreement with the club. She made it clear she is prepared to cut ties if Glasgow United proceeds with bringing Goodwillie on board.
