Man Pleads Guilty in Emsworth Father’s Death After Brutal Head Injury
Father Dies After Suspected Assault
Stephen Harrington, 47, beloved dad, was found with a serious head injury along Marlpit Lane, Emsworth, on July 23, 2022. Rushed to hospital, he tragically passed away two days later.
Three Charged After Fatal Attack
Police swiftly launched an investigation. Thomas Goldring, Joseph Butler, and Tarin Linfield faced murder charges and were due for trial in January 2023. But the case hit a snag when 21-year-old Goldring died in December 2022, wiping out his statements as evidence.
Guilty Pleas and Pending Sentencing
- At Lewes Crown Court on January 23, Tarin Linfield, 21, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and conspiracy to steal, denying murder.
- Joseph Butler, 23, admitted conspiracy to steal but denied murder.
Both remain in custody and face sentencing on March 3, 2023.
Investigation Reveals Fatal Blow with Wooden Weapon
Police say the men targeted Stephen that night to steal. He suffered a severe blow to the head, believed to be from a piece of wood, which proved fatal.
Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Hicks said: “This is a tragic case that has resulted in the sudden and heart-breaking death of a completely innocent and much-loved family man. Only those present that night truly know what happened. Our thoughts are with Stephen’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. We hope this manslaughter conviction brings some closure.”
