Pensioner Jailed For Sexual Assault On Girl And Women In Newark – Two-year Sentence Imposed

In a disturbing case that unfolded in Newark, a 69-year-old pensioner, David Evans, has been sentenced to two years in jail for sexual assaults on a primary school-aged girl and two young women. The incidents occurred between October 2022 and September 2023.

Evans targeted the school-age child while she played in the street on October 29, 2022. After engaging her in conversation, he assaulted her before she managed to escape and raise the alarm. Following his arrest, Evans was initially released on conditional bail as investigations continued.

However, officers reviewing similar incidents connected Evans to two additional offences in Newark. On August 26, he targeted a young woman in a supermarket, and on September 30, he committed a similar offence at Newark bus station. Despite denying all three charges during police interviews, Evans eventually pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault, including one on a girl under 13.

Leicester Crown Court, in a hearing on Wednesday, sentenced Evans to two years in prison and added him to the sex offenders register for ten years. He is also now subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which imposes strict restrictions on his behavior upon release.

The order prohibits Evans from engaging in public conversations with women he does not know, sitting next to them on public transport, and having any contact with girls. Nottinghamshire Police’s specialist team will closely monitor Evans upon his release, and any breach of the order could result in immediate return to prison.

Detective Constable Helen Sanders of Nottinghamshire Police commended the victims for their bravery in providing compelling evidence. She stated, “Evans is clearly a menace to women and girls, and I am pleased he has now been brought to justice.” Sanders emphasised the significance of the jail sentence and the stringent court order designed to prevent future contact with females, warning of legal consequences for any breaches.
