A man has been sentenced to five years in prison after a brutal assault in Sandown left another man with a fractured eye socket.
Paul Bishton, 32, carried out the vicious attack on the evening of December 27, 2021, at a shared accommodation block in Fort Street. The incident unfolded when Bishton invited a fellow resident into his room to interact with his dog.
In an unprovoked assault, Bishton suddenly lunged at the man, striking him in the head with a punch. He then proceeded to continue the attack, delivering repeated kicks to the victim’s face while he lay defenseless on the floor.
Despite the victim’s pleas for mercy, Bishton persisted in his violent assault, punching, kicking, and even stomping on the victim’s head. The result of this relentless attack was severe, with the victim sustaining fractures to his eye socket, a broken nose, and multiple cuts to his face.
Not content with his initial assault, Bishton went on to attack another resident in the accommodation block, leaving him with scratches on his shoulder, arms, and back.
Following his arrest, Bishton was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH). While he admitted to the ABH assault on the second victim, he denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent to the first man.
However, after a trial at Newport Crown Court, Bishton was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He was promptly sentenced to a total of five years in prison by the judge.
Detective Constable Amela Smajic condemned Bishton’s actions, describing the assault as a “horrific display of drunken violence.” She emphasized that such behavior has no place in society and affirmed that Bishton would face the full consequences of his actions.
