Sir David Attenborough Portrait Unveiled by Royal Society
A stunning new portrait of Sir David Attenborough, painted by acclaimed artist Jonathan Yeo, has been unveiled by the Royal Society. The artwork captures the 98-year-old natural history legend seated, hands clasped, and gazing thoughtfully at the viewer.
Honouring a Lifetime of Achievement
Sir David Attenborough expressed deep gratitude for his place in the Royal Society’s esteemed collection. “It was a tremendous honour to be elected a fellow over 40 years ago,” he said. “That my portrait has now been painted by such a master as Jonathan Yeo is extraordinary.”
Reflecting on his career, Sir David added: “Spending my life exploring the natural world’s complexity and beauty — and its fragility — has been a great privilege. This has only been possible thanks to the brilliant filmmakers and dedicated scientists who shared their work with us.”
Exclusive Unveiling Event
The portrait was revealed at a private ceremony attended by Sir David and Royal Society president Sir Adrian Smith. The unveiling was also featured on The One Show, celebrating Sir David’s monumental impact on natural history and science communication.
Artist Jonathan Yeo Pays Tribute
Jonathan Yeo, who recently painted King Charles III, praised Sir David’s lifelong dedication. “Few public figures have inspired generations like Sir David. At a time when many leaders fail to tackle climate threats seriously, his work is a service to all humanity,” Yeo said.
Yeo called the experience “a thrill and privilege,” adding, “Sir David’s wisdom is profound, and his company brilliant and entertaining.” The artist’s impressive portfolio includes portraits of the late Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth, Tony Blair, and David Cameron.
The Royal Society’s Most Iconic Addition
Keith Moore, Head of Library and Archives at the Royal Society, hailed the portrait’s arrival. “We’re delighted to add Sir David’s image to our collection of over 300 artworks and thousands of historical pieces,” he said.
Moore highlighted Sir David’s unique impact: “The Royal Society houses giants like Newton, Darwin, and Einstein. But no one has connected with the public about science more profoundly than Sir David Attenborough. He’s truly one of a kind.”
The portrait stands as a tribute not just to Sir David’s career but to his enduring fight to raise awareness about climate change and protecting biodiversity.
