A close-knit community of firefighters faced a profound tragedy last Wednesday morning when they rushed to the scene of a fatal crash, only to discover the victim was 21-year-old colleague Glenn Campbell. The young firefighter perished in a collision involving his motorcycle and a tanker near the villages of Drem and Dirleton in East Lothian.
Glenn Campbell, who was riding a green Kawasaki ZX 900E1, collided with a red Scania tanker around 7:45 AM. Despite immediate response efforts, Campbell was declared dead at the scene, while the tanker driver sustained no injuries. Police Scotland is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and has appealed to the public for any witnesses or dashcam footage.
The loss has deeply affected the firefighting community, with Area Commander Marc Pincombe noting that Campbell was “well-respected and loved” at the North Berwick Community Fire Station. Tributes have poured in for the young man, remembered for his vibrant spirit and profound love for motorbiking.
Paige Whyte, Campbell’s girlfriend, shared her grief publicly, describing him as her “soulmate” and highlighting his compassionate nature and infectious humour. “Not many people say soulmates exist. I was one of them until Glenn Campbell came into my life,” she stated, expressing her profound sense of loss.
In honour of Campbell, firefighters have altered their social media profiles to include a red line, symbolizing the line of duty. His friends also organized a motorcycle convoy to pay tribute to his passion for biking.
Fellow firefighter Callum Mason reflected on his brief but impactful friendship with Campbell, “I didn’t have the pleasure to know Glenn for long… but I considered him a very close friend by the end of it due to his constant need to help others and make light of everything.
The firefighting community, while reeling from the loss, remains focused on supporting each other and Campbell’s family during this difficult time. They continue to encourage anyone with information related to the crash to come forward and assist with the ongoing police investigation.
