Polish Woman Who Claimed to Be Madeleine McCann Charged with Stalking

Julia Wandel Arrested at Bristol Airport

Julia Wandel, 23, the Polish woman who sparked global headlines by claiming to be missing British child Madeleine McCann, has been hit with stalker charges. She was arrested at Bristol Airport after arriving from Wroclaw, Poland. Leicestershire Police charged her with four counts of stalking. She remains in custody ahead of her court appearance.

Claims of Being Madeleine McCann

Wandel burst onto the scene in February 2023, posting videos on social media under the handle @IAmMadeleineMcCann, insisting she was the long-lost daughter of Kate and Gerry McCann. Madeleine vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007, sparking one of the UK’s most famous missing person cases.

Wandel even released DNA test results alleging a biological connection to Gerry McCann, describing them as a “perfect match.” However, these claims remain unverified and have been met with heavy public scepticism.

Stalking Charges and Additional Arrest

Leicestershire Police revealed the stalking offences cover incidents occurring between January 2024 and February 2025. Two of the charges relate to offences between May 2, 2024, and February 15, 2025, while other counts cover periods in late 2024 and early 2024.

Alongside Wandel, a woman in her 60s believed to be an associate was also arrested on suspicion of stalking but later released on bail. It’s alleged Wandel stalked Kate and Gerry McCann, though police have not confirmed specific victims.

Legal Proceedings and Public Reaction

Wandel is set to appear at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Friday, February 23, to face stalking charges. A Leicestershire Police spokesperson urged the public to steer clear of speculation:

“This is an ongoing investigation, and we encourage the public to refrain from spreading misinformation. The court will handle all matters related to the charges.”

The McCann family has yet to respond to the latest developments.

Ongoing Controversy and Mental Health Concerns

Wandel’s DNA claims and stalking allegations have reignited the decades-old mystery surrounding Madeleine’s disappearance. Experts warn Wandel may need psychiatric evaluation given her persistent, unverified claims. If convicted, she faces possible jail time and restraining orders.
