Violence erupted in Havant last night as a crowd of hundreds of people clashed with armed police officers following the arrest of a man accused of engaging in sexual communications with a child.

The 38-year-old suspect was taken into custody by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary on Middle Park Way, in what police confirmed was a pre-planned operation. Online footage from the scene shows officers with riot shields being confronted by angry residents, with chants of “paedo!” and “protect the kids!” erupting as a police van attempted to leave the area.

Projectiles Thrown, Officers Barricaded

Crowds surrounded the police vehicle, with some individuals allegedly throwing bricks and projectiles as officers formed defensive barricades. Tensions flared after an online vigilante group, believed to be so-called “paedo-hunters,” reportedly confronted the suspect prior to the police intervention.

A statement from the group later acknowledged the disorder, saying:

“It’s come to our attention that people were throwing bricks. This is totally unacceptable. Anyone caught doing so will be reported and dealt with robustly.”

They added that such actions “risk the police and government shutting groups down,” and urged the public to refrain from interfering in live sting operations.

Police Confirm Arrest and Investigation

In an official statement, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said:

“Officers have arrested a 38-year-old man from Havant on suspicion of engaging in sexual communications with a child.
The man remains in police custody at this time. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

The identity of the suspect has not been released, and no injuries to officers have been confirmed. It remains unclear whether any members of the public were injured during the disturbance.
