Double Fatal Crashes Shut M4 Between J17 and J18
The M4 between Junctions 17 and 18 remains shut in both directions after two deadly crashes early this morning.
Early Eastbound Crash Claims One Life
The first smash happened just after 1.30am on the eastbound carriageway. A lone car was involved. One man died at the scene, while another suffered life-threatening head injuries and was rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
Westbound Collision Involving Lorries and Van Kills One
Less than two hours later, a second crash struck the westbound side near the same junctions. Two articulated lorries, a car, and a van collided. Again, one man was pronounced dead on scene. Two others were taken to Southmead Hospital.
Emergency crews faced extra danger as one vehicle was transporting leaking propane gas canisters. Firefighters were called in to secure the scene.
Police Plea for Witnesses and Dash Cam Footage
“We had to respond to two truly tragic incidents this morning and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims,” said Supt Phil Staynings.
“This is a complex incident that stretched all emergency services. Investigations will take time. We ask the public for patience while the M4 remains closed. We’re working closely with Highways England to reopen the road safely.”
Supt Staynings added: “If you witnessed these crashes or have dash cam footage, please contact us on 101.”
Traffic Chaos and Road Closure Updates
Police hope to reopen the eastbound carriageway by midday. But the westbound side is set to stay closed all day.
Locals are urged to avoid the area due to heavy traffic on surrounding roads. For diversion details, visit Highways England’s official site.
