Michael Elmer Caught by Internet Child Abuse Team

Michael Elmer, 36, a former Avon & Somerset police constable based in Bristol, was arrested in May 2025. Officers acting on a tip-off swooped in, charging him with five serious offences involving indecent images of children.

Guilty Plea at Exeter Crown Court

In a February hearing at Exeter Crown Court, Elmer admitted guilt to:

  • ▪️ Three counts of making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children
  • ▪️ One count of distributing such images
  • ▪️ One count of sharing a private intimate photo or film for sexual gratification

His sentencing is set for Monday, 20 April.

Police Conduct Hearings Confirm Lifetime Ban

Elmer was suspended immediately after his arrest and has since resigned. On Tuesday, 7 April, an accelerated misconduct hearing at Avon & Somerset Police HQ ruled his behaviour grossly inappropriate. If he hadn’t quit, he would have been dismissed outright and banned from policing for life.

Police Speak Out

Deputy Chief Constable Jon Reilly slammed Elmer’s actions as “abhorrent.” “Once we learned of his offences, we acted swiftly. He’s now banned from policing or any law enforcement role for life. His actions have shocked his former colleagues and betrayed public trust. While we take firm action on offenders like him, the vast majority of officers remain dedicated and courageous.”
