Jurors Break Down Watching Shocking Video of 7-Year-Old Pleading for Life
Jurors sobbed uncontrollably after watching a gut-wrenching video of seven-year-old Athena Strand repeatedly asking her abductor, a FedEx driver, “Are you a kidnapper?” moments before he brutally killed her. The chilling footage was played during Tanner Horner’s sentencing hearing in a Fort Worth courtroom on Thursday. Athena’s terrified voice echoes, speaking softly about her teacher and school while trapped inside the killer’s truck. The tension skyrocketed as Athena’s fear grew when the vehicle came to a halt. Horner warned her not to scream and covered the camera, leaving only haunting audio of the child questioning her fate.
Kidnapper Tanner Horner’s Shocking Confession
Horner, 34, snatched Athena from her family home in Paradise, Texas, on November 30, 2022, while delivering a Christmas parcel of Barbies her dad and step-mum had bought. Hours before his trial began, Horner abruptly pleaded guilty to capital murder. He admitted strangling Athena after hitting her with his van by accident and then panicking. He claimed an alternate personality, “Zero,” took over during the killing.
“I didn’t do it, but he did, and that’s what f***s with me… I’m wondering who the hell’s been in my head this whole time,” Horner told investigators.
He told police he tried to calm Athena and told her they were heading to a hospital, but when she resisted, Zero allegedly “pulled the trigger.”
Family Trauma and Courtroom Drama
The emotional toll was unbearable for Athena’s family. Her parents, Jacob Strand and Maitlyn Gandy, testified but did not watch the footage. Several of Athena’s relatives left the courtroom as the heartbreaking audio played. A graphic photo shown last week captured Athena kneeling in Horner’s truck just before the horrific murder. The child’s stepmother, Ashley Strand, described how Athena loved the freedom of living on their country land, “running wild and free.” The parcel Horner delivered was meant to be a Christmas gift.
Judge Warns Audience on Graphic Footage
Prior to showing the video, Judge George Gallagher urged those sensitive to violent content to leave the courtroom. “If you think you cannot watch it or listen to it, leave now. Now’s your time to get out,” he warned. The full dashcam footage shows Horner arriving at Athena’s home, picking her up and placing her inside his truck. Athena’s trembling voice repeatedly asks if he is a kidnapper and where they’re going. The last moments included pleading for her mum and harrowing screams before audio cuts out. Horner is now awaiting sentencing as jurors decide if the death penalty is warranted for the FedEx driver who shattered one family’s world.
