Shooting suspect Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, was charged with shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening. Surveillance footage captured Allen running past security with a handgun, sparking an armed response by Secret Service officers and local law enforcement. The dinner event, attended by politicians, journalists, and Donald Trump, was abruptly disrupted around 8:15pm as shots were fired inside the venue. Allen was tackled and arrested at the scene.
Storming The Event
Video showed Allen dressed in black, sprinting inside the hotel armed with multiple weapons. Security guards in the hallway reacted instantly, drawing firearms as Allen passed and began exchanging gunfire with the agents. Secret Service quickly intervened, tackling and handcuffing Allen as chaos unfolded.
High-profile Guests Duck For Cover
Attendees, including President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and press secretary Karoline Leavitt, were forced to take cover under tables before armed guards evacuated them from the ballroom. Footage also showed House Speaker Mike Johnson being rushed out, and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ducking to safety with his wife.
Charges And Court Appearance
Allen faces federal charges, including two counts of using a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. If convicted, he could face decades behind bars. He is due to be arraigned in federal court on Monday.
Secret Service Response Praised
Deputy Director Matthew Quinn labelled Allen a “coward” for attempting to create a tragedy but praised the rapid response of the Secret Service and law enforcement for preventing further harm. One officer was hit in a bulletproof vest but is expected to recover; no other injuries were reported.
Suspect Background
Allen, a mechanical engineer and former teacher recognised for excellence, had no prior criminal record. He holds degrees from the California Institute of Technology and California State University. Authorities searched his family’s home after the arrest. Public records and social media reveal a previously unknown individual with a solid academic background.
