A former prison officer from Devon, Monika Richards, 46, was sentenced to 14 months at Exeter Crown Court on 5 May after pleading guilty to misconduct in public office and involvement in supplying class C drugs while working at HMP Exeter.
Officers Expose Prison Misconduct
The South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) uncovered that Richards failed to report a serving inmate’s use of illicit mobile phones and had been communicating with the prisoner herself using one of the hidden devices. Two small mobile phones were discovered during a cell search, with call logs confirming contact between Richards and the prisoner.
Drug Supply Outside Prison
Further investigation revealed Richards was also supplying diazepam, a class C controlled drug, to associates outside the prison. SWROCU’s examination of her devices confirmed her involvement in drug supply activities beyond the prison walls.
Police Warn Of Serious Risks
PC Mark Paterson, a SWROCU corruption investigator, highlighted the dangers of prison staff ignoring their duties: “Illicit mobile phones allow criminals to further their illegal activities both inside and outside prisons. Failure to report such offences risks serious crime and potential staff manipulation or blackmail.”
Public Trust Betrayed
Richards’ actions were described by PC Paterson as falling “far below what would be expected of a public servant in a position of trust.” The case serves as a warning about the risks posed by corrupt staff within the prison system.
