A 21-year-old British man, Taylor Johnson, was arrested at Istanbul Airport after attempting to smuggle a suitcase full of cannabis from Bangkok, Thailand. Desperate Defence Plea
Taylor Johnson told the Turkish court he was coerced into carrying the suitcase by a man he had been involved in a car accident with. Taylor claimed he was threatened and demanded £3,000 to keep silent. Lacking the money, he was instructed to travel to Thailand to collect a “specially designed suitcase” and transport it to the UK. Taylor insists he was unaware the case contained drugs.
“The person involved in the accident had obtained my details. About a week later, he began threatening both me and my family. He demanded £3,000 from me. I told him I did not have the money. He then instructed me to travel to Thailand and bring back an item located there to the United Kingdom.”
Girlfriend’s Role Questioned
Holly Cooper was released after convincing a Turkish judge she had no knowledge of the drugs hidden in the suitcase. When questioned why she did not suspect anything, Holly explained her partner had travelled with a new suitcase because his original one was damaged, a claim the court accepted.
Brutal Detention Claims
Johnson’s family alleges he was beaten by Turkish police upon arrest, though no official confirmation has been provided. He is currently held in Maltepe Prison in a dormitory for foreign inmates as he awaits sentencing next month.
