Jessica Smith, 46, from Newton Poppleford, has been jailed for four years and four months after attempting to incite what she believed was a 12-year-old girl into sexual activity. The offence came to light when Smith contacted an undercover police officer posing as the child.

The sentencing took place at Exeter Crown Court in early 2025.

Repeated Sexual Harm Violations

Smith, a convicted paedophile who identifies as a trans female, admitted to six offences, including four breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. These breaches involved creating internet accounts despite the ban and failing to inform the police about possession of a laptop.

Previous Predatory Behaviour

The court heard that Smith has a history of similar sexual offences. In 2021, she arranged to meet a 14-year-old girl but was caught by paedophile hunters hiding in bushes.

This pattern of offending was a factor in her sentencing.

Mental Health Factors Considered

Judge Stephen Climie noted that Smith has longstanding mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. Although mental ill health was considered a significant aspect behind her behaviour, the judge did not impose an extended sentence for dangerousness.

Sexual Harm Prevention Order Maintained

The Sexual Harm Prevention Order against Smith remains in place until further notice to restrict her access to potential victims and monitor her activities.

“Smith sought sexual gratification from the offending and has experienced bullying, social isolation and a strong desire to be accepted,” said defence counsel Kelly Scrivener.
