The family of a Portsmouth woman who was allegedly murdered after travelling to the United States have paid a moving tribute, describing her as the “most gentle soul” whose kindness touched everyone she met. Sonia Exelby, 32, from Southsea, was found dead in Marion County, Florida, on 17 October 2025, days after travelling from the UK. Her family has now shared an emotional statement celebrating her life ahead of the criminal trial of the man accused of her murder.

“A Truly Beautiful Person”

In a heartfelt tribute released on 27 July, Sonia’s loved ones described her as “a truly beautiful person, inside and out.” They said:

“She had the gentlest soul – so gentle that she chose to become vegan because she couldn’t bear the thought of any animal suffering just so she could eat. That was who she was: kind, compassionate, and full of quiet love.”

Family members said Sonia’s warmth, empathy and generosity made everyone around her feel accepted. They also remembered her exceptional musical talent.

“Sonia could play the piano so effortlessly, and when she sang, she had the voice of an angel. Being around her felt special – she brought a calmness and warmth that made everything feel a little lighter.”

Deeply Loved by Family

The youngest of six children, Sonia was raised in Portchester and remained especially close to her family throughout her life. Her relatives spoke of her special bond with her sister Sara, describing a relationship that “will never be broken.” They also paid tribute to her long-term partner Stevie, with whom she had shared 15 years, and said she was a devoted aunt who loved teaching her nieces and nephews music. One friend described Sonia as someone with:

“The biggest and purest heart.”

Her siblings added:

“She was softly spoken and always gave the best, most intense hugs. She was the baby out of us that kept us bound together.

“We will never get over losing her. The world has lost so much kindness and light.”

Investigation Continues

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary received a missing person report on 12 October 2025, after enquiries established Sonia had travelled overseas. Her body was later discovered in Marion County, Florida. The investigation is being led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

Murder Charges

Dwain Hall, 53, of Ocala, Florida, has been charged with:

  • First-degree murder
  • Kidnapping

Investigators allege Hall met Sonia through a fetish website in 2024. He has pleaded not guilty, and a trial is expected to take place later this year. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers continue to work closely with US investigators as the case progresses.

Remembering Sonia

In their closing tribute, Sonia’s family said they wanted her to be remembered for the life she lived rather than the circumstances of her death. They said:

“We know that life wasn’t always easy for you, but your life was so much more than the struggles you faced.

“You were deeply loved, and you will always be deeply loved.

“We miss you more than words can ever say. We love you so much, always, and forever.”

The criminal proceedings in the United States remain ongoing.
