In the early hours of February 17, 2024, a family of five became trapped in the muddy marshes of West Wittering as the tide loomed dangerously close. The harrowing ordeal kicked off an urgent multi-agency rescue. At 12:44am, calls flooded in to West Sussex Fire & Rescue, South East Coast Ambulance, Portsmouth Coastguard, and the elite Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team.
Initial efforts by four fire service members to reach the family were almost thwarted by the sinking mud. The seriousness of the situation called for Selsey’s expert Mud Technicians—rescue specialists trained to navigate these deadly conditions.
Rescue Gear and Expertise Save the Day
Armed with specialist mud rescue equipment, two Mud Technicians braved the hazardous terrain and made their way to the stranded family. Their skill and gear proved critical. Together with other emergency crews, they managed to pull the family free and bring them back to solid ground, where paramedics immediately checked their condition.
Luckily, despite the cold and frightening moments, the family escaped without injury. Ambulance crews treated and warmed them, confirming they were in good health.
