Essex Cops Save Woman from Deadly Fall in Nail-Biting Rescue

PCs Stu Francis and Grant Hawkins have been hailed heroes after a daring rescue in West Drayton. In July 2023, the Essex officers rushed to save a woman dangling by her fingertips from the edge of a tall building.

Life-or-Death Situation on Building’s Edge

A member of the public flagged down the police as the woman clung to the ledge, barely conscious. Without hesitation, the officers grabbed a collapsing ladder from their patrol car and climbed to the roof.

“We were able to get up onto the roof of the building where she was, and then climb along the edge to reach her,” PC Francis recalled. “She was hanging just by her hands with her feet dangling over the precipice.”

Quick Thinking and Bravery Save a Life

With no safe footing in sight, the two PCs carefully navigated the narrow ledge to reach the woman, preventing a fatal plunge. Their swift action also ensured medical teams got to her in time.

Chief Constable Praises Officers’ Courage

Essex Police Chief Constable said, “Their heroic actions and quick thinking under pressure exemplify the bravery and dedication our officers must be prepared to display. We are incredibly proud to have such courageous individuals serving our community.”

The Essex Police Federation Bravery Awards recognised the guts and commitment of PCs Francis and Hawkins — shining a spotlight on the dangerous front-line work of our police force.
