London’s Air Ambulance Hits Record High with 2,007 Life-Saving Missions

London’s Air Ambulance Charity has smashed records in a year of soaring demand, rushing critical care to 2,007 patients across the capital. As emergency calls flood in, the charity stands as a lifeline, rushing expert medics straight to the scene — not just ferrying patients to hospital.

£15 Million ‘Up Against Time’ Campaign Racing to Fund New Helicopters

The charity is now in the final push of its urgent “Up Against Time” fundraiser, aiming to raise £15 million by autumn. The cash will replace aging helicopters that are becoming costly and tricky to maintain. Without new aircraft, the charity’s ability to save lives is at risk.

South London Boroughs See Most Air Ambulance Action

The service has answered calls far and wide, but south-east London hotspots are the busiest. Southwark leads with 103 patients airlifted or treated on scene, closely trailed by Lambeth with 99. Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, and Lewisham also report high numbers.

Assaults Drive Nearly a Third of Emergency Call-Outs

  • 28% of missions respond to assaults
  • Car crashes and falls from height are major culprits
  • Complex treatments include chest surgery, blood transfusions, and lung reinflations

Contrary to popular belief, the Air Ambulance’s skill lies in delivering hospital-level care at the emergency site — from inducing comas to performing chest surgery, effectively turning a crisis zone into a flying A&E.

“Our dedicated team works tirelessly to deliver life-saving interventions directly to patients when every second counts,” said Dr Tom Hurst, Medical Director at London’s Air Ambulance.

Jonathan Jenkins, Chief Exec of the charity, warns the air ambulance service is stretched thin. He urged Londoners to keep donations flowing, especially after government funding fell short. “Every pound brings us closer to replacing our fleet and continuing our life-saving work,” Jenkins said.
