Security Alert Ends in Maghera After Dramatic Arrest

A tense security alert in Maghera’s Ranaghan Road area wrapped up Wednesday night with a major arrest. The Police Service Northern Ireland swooped on a man in his 50s, charging him with multiple serious offences.

Homes Evacuated as Police Swarm Area

The incident kicked off earlier on Wednesday, forcing several homes to be evacuated as a precaution. Residents were temporarily displaced while officers carried out a detailed investigation.

Man Held on Explosives and Drug Charges

Detective Inspector Fenton revealed the suspect is facing serious allegations, including:

  • Possession of explosives under suspicious circumstances
  • Cultivating cannabis
  • Possession of a Class B controlled drug

The 50-something remains in police custody as enquiries continue.

Residents Allowed Home; Roads Reopen

By early evening, the alert was lifted. Residents returned home and roads shut during the operation reopened to traffic.

“Although the security alert has ended, officers remain at the scene and our enquiries are continuing,” said Detective Inspector Fenton. “We thank the community for their patience and understanding during this disruptive time.”
