Massive Fire Destroys Historic Building in Ventnor

Brave firefighters from Shanklin, Ventnor, Newport, Freshwater, Sandown, Ryde, Cowes, and East Cowes battled through the night to tackle a ferocious blaze that erupted around 6 p.m. yesterday. The fire gutted a building slated for demolition to make way for a new seafront residence.

Arson Suspected as Victorian Dome Destroyed

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the fire is being treated as arson. The structure featured a prized Victorian dome, which was a key part of the planned restoration design. Tragically, the dome was destroyed in the fire, with the cast iron frame buckling under intense heat.

Malcolm, co-owner of the associated website, said: “We are extremely grateful to our neighbours for alerting emergency services quickly, allowing crews from across the Island to work through the night to put out the fire.”

Owners Heartbroken but Relieved No One Hurt

Malcolm added, “First and foremost, I’d like to express how relieved my family and I are to know no one was injured in last night’s fire.”

He also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the dome: “It is heartbreaking to see such an important part of the building, which we worked hard to preserve, destroyed. We fell in love with Ventnor a decade ago and remain committed to the town despite this setback.”

Community Impact and Call for Information

  • Residents were advised to stay indoors and close windows during the fire.
  • The nearby Smoking Lobster restaurant evacuated as a precaution.
  • The Wellington Hotel stepped in to offer free lodging to those in need.

Police are urging anyone with information about the blaze to call 101 quoting reference 44220226052.
