Ex-Doncaster Prison Officer Jailed Over Smuggling Scandal
A former Doncaster prison officer has been hit with a hefty jail sentence for trying to sneak illegal items into the very prison where he worked.
Thomas Walls Busted With Drugs and Contraband
Thomas Walls, 26, from Intake, pleaded guilty at Sheffield Crown Court to possession with intent to supply both Class A and Class B drugs. The ex-officer also admitted to smuggling List A, B & C prohibited items into HMP Doncaster.
Downfall After Suspicious Behaviour and CCTV Evidence
- Police arrested Walls in November 2019 following staff concerns over his dodgy conduct.
- CCTV showed him leaving and returning with a prison issue bag stuffed with wrapped parcels.
- Searches uncovered mobile phones, tobacco, lighters, chargers, white powder, spice, and cannabis.
Officials Slam Walls’ ‘Betrayal’ of Trust
“Walls abused his position as a prison officer and now faces a custodial sentence himself,” said Detective Constable Jon White from Doncaster’s Prison Crime Unit.
“He made repeated efforts to dodge searches, fueling organised crime and putting colleagues at risk daily. We hope this sends a powerful warning to anyone thinking of smuggling into prisons: we’re watching, ready to act.”
John Hewitson, Serco Prison Director at HMP Doncaster, added: “Serco has zero tolerance for breaking the law. We will continue working with police to stop contraband from entering our prisons.”
Walls was sentenced to five years and seven months behind bars, marking a severe fall from grace for the former jail guard.
