Builder Jailed for Setting Fire to Boost Insurance Payout
Michael Maggs, 52, has been sentenced to 13 months in prison at Inverness Sheriff Court today, Monday 17 April 2023, after admitting attempted fraud.
Arson Sparks Fire at Highland Development
Maggs was working on developing three properties at Earlseat Steading, Moyness. A suspicious fire broke out on site, prompting an emergency call. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service quickly arrived to tackle the blaze.
“The consequences of deliberate fire-setting can be devastating,” said Michael Humphreys, the 123 Area Commander and Local Senior Officer for Highland. “Fires can cause serious injury or death, as well as extensive damage to properties and our firefighters.”
Insurance Fraud Costs Everyone
Officials revealed that Maggs set the fire to make an insurance claim. Insurance Fraud Bureau head of Intelligence, Investigations and Data Services emphasised:
“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It costs everyone and can even put innocent people at risk. We’re pleased that our collaboration with Police Scotland and SFRS has helped bring Maggs to justice.
Maggs’ conviction sends a clear warning: arson for profit won’t be tolerated in Scotland.
