Elderly Man Robbed After ATM Withdrawal in Bilborough
John Ward, 41, brazenly snatched a wallet from a 78-year-old victim on Bracebridge Drive, Bilborough, shortly after the victim withdrew a large sum of cash on May 31, 2022.
Ward casually stepped out of a car, strode up to the elderly man, and wrenched the wallet from his hands before speeding off in the same vehicle.
Quick Police Action Leads to Arrest
Thanks to a quick-thinking member of the public who provided a partial number plate, officers swiftly tracked down the Vauxhall Corsa involved and arrested all three occupants.
Inside the car, police found the victim’s stolen wallet. CCTV footage later revealed the robber dressed in clothes matching Ward’s.
Ward Sentenced to Nearly Three Years Behind Bars
Ward of Victoria Street, Ironville, initially refused to speak to police but later pleaded guilty to robbery. He was sentenced to two years and 11 months at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday.
“This was a wicked and cowardly attack on an elderly victim,” said Detective Constable Dionne Love of Nottinghamshire Police.
“Ward saw an opportunity and pounced on a man he saw as an easy target. The victim already suffers serious health issues, and Ward showed no regard for his welfare, risking serious injury.
Thanks to the quick-thinking witness and our officers, justice has been served.”
