Man Held After 30-Hour Siege at Winchester Flats
Police ended a tense two-day stand-off with a man in his 60s at Mountbatten Court, Winchester. Officers were called to the scene on Wednesday, 25 August, following reports of a public order incident at the block of flats on Andover Road.
Firearms, Dogs, and Negotiators on Scene
Armed police and dog handlers joined the operation amid reports the man was resisting eviction by landlords. With 13 police vehicles initially cordoning off the area, residents were barred from entering or leaving the road as officers tried to coax the man to surrender peacefully.
Some police cordons were lifted late Thursday as the operation scaled down, but officers stayed overnight. After more than 30 hours, police finally forced entry just before 10pm on 26 August, arresting the man.
Suspect Arrested on Firearm and Assault Charges
Hampshire Police said: “A 60-year-old man from Winchester was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and common assault. An air weapon was seized during the incident. He remains in custody.”
The incident began on Wednesday afternoon when officers arrived at the scene and were threatened with a weapon. Authorities have confirmed there is no wider risk to the community. They thanked local residents for their patience throughout the disruption.
