Belvedere Man Jailed After Dangerous Police Chase and Lie
A 21-year-old from Belvedere has been locked up for six months following a high-speed police chase and a failed attempt to cover his tracks.
Chase Kicks Off at Busy M25 Roundabout
On September 30, 2023, an officer spotted suspicious activity at Hewitts Roundabout, near junction four of the M25. While speaking to a group nearby, the patrol officer heard a revving engine and saw a white VW Polo hurtle onto the roundabout.
The officer gave chase but quickly lost sight of the speeding car.
Fake Photos and False Claims of Car Cloning
The VW Polo’s registered owner denied driving the car, claiming it had been cloned. He sent altered photos to the police, hoping to dodge responsibility.
But a thorough investigation busted his story. Officers confirmed the car wasn’t cloned and the owner was behind the wheel during the chase.
Charged and Sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court
The man was hit with charges including perverting the course of justice, driving without due care, and failure to stop for police.
He appeared at Woolwich Crown Court on July 19, 2024, where he was sentenced to six months behind bars.
PC Dan Goodman said, “We do not underestimate the impact the anti-social use of vehicles can have on residents’ quality of life. There is often a risk to the safety of other road users and we will do all we can to target those who persistently cause a nuisance. As shown in this case, there is no hiding; those committing offences will be brought to justice.”
