Drink-Driver Jailed for Horrific Crash That Left Passenger Seriously Injured
Samuel Berrisford, 22, from Biddulph, has been handed a three-year prison sentence for a shocking hit-and-run near Congleton. The reckless driver fled the scene after crashing his car into a wall, leaving his passenger with life-threatening injuries.
Crash Details: Party Turns Tragic
On the night of Saturday, 13 May 2023, Berrisford and a 37-year-old woman drove to Sandbach for a night out playing 123. But the joyride ended in disaster when he lost control and collided with a wall.
After the crash, Berrisford briefly checked on his passenger before deciding to flee, abandoning the injured woman. A local resident, attracted by the noise, rushed to help but found Berrisford had already vanished.
Victim’s Horrific Injuries
The woman suffered devastating injuries, including spinal fractures and a perforated bowel. She required emergency surgery and endured two-and-a-half weeks in hospital fighting for her life.
Guilty Plea and Harsh Sentence
Berrisford admitted to dangerous driving causing serious injury, drink-driving, and failing to stop after a collision at Warrington Magistrates’ Court in January. Besides his three-year jail term, he received a four-year driving ban starting after his release.
“This case shows a reckless disregard for human life,” said Sergeant Jackie Cantrell of Cheshire Police. “The victim’s traumatic injuries and suffering can never be undone. I hope Berrisford’s punishment brings her some closure.”
