Chemical Spill Sparks Emergency at Southampton Docks

Southampton was on high alert yesterday as a chemical spill at Dock Gate 20 sparked a major emergency response. Firefighters suited up in hazardous gear to tackle the dangerous leak, forcing nearby businesses to evacuate.

Firefighters Race to Contain Chemical Leak

At least six Hampshire Fire and Rescue vehicles, including specialist decontamination units, rushed to the scene after reports of the spill emerged early Thursday. A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed:

“We are attending a possible chemical spill within an area in the docks. Several businesses in the area were evacuated while the spill, believed to have been from a container, was tackled.”

Police Set Up Cordon as Tense Operation Unfolds

Hampshire Police worked alongside the fire service to manage the scene. A police spokesperson said:

“Hampshire Police along with partner emergency services were called to the scene of a chemical spill in Herbert Walker Avenue within Southampton Dock this morning. The Fire Service have set up a precautionary cordon whilst they deal with the spill, and police officers are assisting at the cordon.”

Workers Evacuated Amid Panic

A spokesperson from nearby company Pentavial recalled the chaos. “I was on the phone when firefighters came in to evacuate us. They said it was a possible chemical leak,” she said. “I saw three fire engines and a lorry cordoned off down the road. The firefighters were changing into their gear.”

The situation is still being monitored as crews continue clean-up operations at Southampton Docks.
