Convicted Rapist Dies by Suicide at HMP Wakefield
Bahram Razvani, a 33-year-old Iranian asylum seeker serving a 12-year sentence, has died by suicide at HMP Wakefield just over two years after being jailed.
‘Predatory’ Offender with Violent Past
Razvani was sentenced in 2022 after admitting to raping an intoxicated woman while she slept. Police labelled him “predatory” at the time. Prison reports reveal he had a history of violence against other inmates.
In June 2024, Razvani was viciously attacked in his cell, suffering multiple facial fractures and a torn artery in his neck. Staff suspected he had been given illicit drugs beforehand, making it easier for the assault to take place.
Found Hanged in Cell, Death Confirmed as Suicide
After hospital treatment, Razvani was moved to a different wing. On 31 July 2025, staff found him hanged in his cell. An inquest later confirmed the death was suicide. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman found no signs Razvani was at imminent risk of self-harm in the days before his death.
Staff Honour Prisoner’s Burial Wishes
Initially, prison staff struggled to locate Razvani’s next of kin. Once discovered, they learned his faith required specific burial customs. A Bradford funeral director was arranged to handle the service, with the prison covering the higher costs.
“Staff showed sensitivity and attention to detail, setting an example of good practice,” the Ombudsman praised.
