Ex-Rock Star Paul Gadd Freed After Half of 16-Year Sentence
Paul Gadd, the 79-year-old former rock star better known as Gary Glitter, has been released from prison after serving half of his 16-year sentence for sexually abusing three schoolgirls.
Released From Low-Security Jail with Licence Restrictions
Glitter was freed from HMP The Verne, a low-security category C prison in Portland, Dorset, last Friday. He had served eight years of his sentence and is now subject to strict licence conditions.
The disgraced singer previously served time at HMP Albany on the Isle of Wight and was automatically released halfway through his fixed-term determinate sentence.
Crimes Against Vulnerable Victims Exposed After Decades
At the height of his fame, Glitter preyed on vulnerable young girls who were afraid to speak out against a celebrity figure. Two girls, aged 12 and 13, were lured backstage and attacked after being separated from their mothers.
In a harrowing 1975 case, a third victim, under the age of 10, was attacked in her bed in an attempted rape.
First to Be Arrested in Operation Yewtree
The chilling abuses came to light 40 years later when Glitter became the first person arrested in Operation Yewtree, the Metropolitan Police investigation triggered by the Jimmy Savile scandal.
