Man Jailed for Brutal Hotel Assault on Ex in Derby

Jamie Mewis has been locked up for 21 months after violently grabbing his ex-partner by the throat during a furious row at a Derby hotel.

Fury Over Phone Messages Sparks Terrifying Attack

The shocking assault took place in August 2024 when the couple argued over messages found on Mewis’s phone. His ex-partner decided to leave, but Mewis lost control. He grabbed her neck and hurled her onto the bed. The victim fell and hit her head on a wall after he let go. Terrified, she fled to the hotel reception where staff called the police. Mewis fled the scene but was caught three days later.

Victim Speaks Out: ‘My Life’s Been Turned Upside Down’

“Since Jamie assaulted me, it has completely turned my life upside down. I have been left with physical and mental trauma, including severe depression, borderline personality disorder and PTSD. I barely leave the house and do not do group sessions with friends. There is no sentence that can improve my health but I do not want this to happen to anyone else and I am hopeful that after Jamie is sentenced, I can find closure at last.”

Court Hands Down Jail and 10-Year No-Contact Order

Mewis, 36, from Hill Crest Road, Derby, first denied the charges of intentional strangulation and assault. He later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm in a plea deal. Derby Crown Court sentenced him to 21 months behind bars. He also received a 10-year restraining order banning any contact with the victim.

Police Praise Victim’s Strength, Urge Others to Speak Up

Detective Staff Investigator David Wright said: “Mewis is a violent offender who caused this woman to fear for her life. The consequences of his behaviour are still hitting her hard mentally, even after the physical wounds have healed. I want to praise her courage for reporting this and seeing the case through. Her bravery in giving evidence pushed this case forward and forced Mewis to accept a guilty plea. If you are suffering domestic abuse, please reach out.
