A lorry driver broke down in tears as he admitted causing a fatal crash that killed two best friends on Southampton’s M271 last December.

Deadly Crash on Southampton Motorway

Keith Mees, 49, from Derbyshire, pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. The tragedy unfolded when his truck, reportedly while he was using a mobile phone, rammed into another lorry before crushing a car carrying Marian Olteanu, 35, and his passenger Ion Calin, 42.

Two Friends Killed, Third Injured

The smash involved three lorries and a car. Marian Olteanu and Ion Calin were killed instantly. Another lorry driver was seriously injured in the pile-up. Mees also admitted causing serious injury to this driver by dangerous driving.

Sentencing Set for December

Mees will be sentenced on 2 December at Southampton Crown Court. The devastating incident has left the local community reeling and raised fresh concerns about mobile phone use behind the wheel.
