Ten fire engines have raced to Southampton docks after a huge blaze broke out on a ship loaded with 7,000 tonnes of scrap metal. The fire, which ignited late Saturday evening, sparked a major emergency response just before 10pm at Dock Gate 20.

More than 50 firefighters and officers are battling the intense fire. Crews from Redbridge, St Mary’s, Gosport, Cosham, Eastleigh, Botley, and Southsea have all been deployed to tackle the growing inferno. Fire bosses warn this will be a long, drawn-out operation.

The command and control unit has been sent to coordinate the firefighting efforts on-site, ensuring all teams work efficiently to contain the blaze.

“Overnight, we have successfully contained the fire. Thankfully, nobody has been injured. We are now beginning to scale down our response,” said Hampshire Fire and Rescue.
