Worthing Man Caught with Illegal XL Bully Dog
Patrick McKeown, 40, from central Worthing, is in hot water after being found in possession of an XL Bully dog, banned under fresh laws that came into force on February 1. The former builder’s illegal pet was uncovered during an unrelated police probe, leading to serious legal consequences.
Owner Breaks Multiple Laws
McKeown didn’t just own the banned breed without exemption—he also failed to neuter the dog and lacked the compulsory insurance. Disturbingly, witnesses saw the dog roaming freely around his backyard. When questioned, McKeown warned officers his dog was aggressive and would attack anyone who got too close.
Dog Seized and Owner Sentenced
Police moved in and seized the animal after executing a warrant at McKeown’s Church Road, Tarring home. On March 12, he appeared at Worthing Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to owning a fighting dog, in violation of the Dangerous Dogs Act.
The court handed down a one-year community order requiring 100 hours of unpaid work. McKeown was also slapped with £85 in costs and a £114 surcharge. In a controversial ruling, the court approved the destruction of the dog, pending appeal.
Police Issue Stark Warning on XL Bully Ownership
Chief Inspector Simon Starns, Sussex’s lead on dangerous dogs, said: “This was one of the first prosecutions under the new laws in Sussex. It shows dog owners must follow these strict rules.”
“We’re working closely with partners to promote responsible ownership and keep the public safe. All XL Bully dogs must be muzzled and kept on a lead by someone over 16 in public.”
The message is clear: ignore the laws on XL Bully ownership and face serious consequences.
