Invisible Spray Tags Target Troublemakers in Ashford Nightlife

Ashford’s Community Safety Unit has launched a first-of-its-kind scheme in Kent, equipping door staff with special spray canisters that mark potential offenders with a harmless, invisible liquid. This clever liquid carries a unique forensic code that links tagged individuals to a specific place and time, making it easier for police to crack down on troublemakers.

Cutting-Edge Tech to Curb Night-Time Crime

Police can use the unique coding in the spray to track offenders involved in violence or disorder in the town centre. Venues armed with UV torches can then spot these troublemakers instantly and refuse them entry elsewhere, stopping the roaming troublemaker in their tracks.

SmartTag Rolls Out After Nationwide Success

Funded by the Safer Streets Fund, the SmartTag scheme debuted in an Ashford venue last December and looks set to spread across town. It’s open to security staff accredited by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) and backed by Ashford Borough Council and the Ashford Partnership Against Crime (APAC). APAC links police, local council, and over 60 local businesses to fight crime together.

Police and Leaders Praise Game-Changing Initiative

“This is a perpetrator-focused initiative to deter would-be offenders and expand the tools available to staff working in the night-time economy,” said PC Alistair Pringle of Ashford Community Safety Unit. “It can also identify those responsible for criminal acts, including violence against women and girls. I hope the new tagging system will deter crime, protect our community and stop troublemakers moving between venues.”

Cllr Peter Feacey, Ashford Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Wellbeing, added: “I am very pleased to see this new technology brought to our pubs and bars. It supports our APAC network, acts as a crime deterrent, and aids our security and police teams. We want Ashford town centre to remain safe and welcoming for all visitors.”

Glyn Walker from APAC said: “We’ve worked hard with Kent Police and Ashford Borough Council to create a safer night-time economy. SmartTag is the latest weapon in our arsenal, letting venues identify offenders tagged elsewhere. It’s a brilliant example of businesses teaming up with police and local authorities to protect themselves and their customers.”
