A 19-year-old woman has reported a sexual offence after leaving Astoria nightclub between 2.30am and 3.30am. Police have launched an urgent investigation.

Man Arrested Over Alleged Rape Near Nightclub

A 20-year-old man from portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth was arrested on suspicion of rape and is currently in police custody. Earlier, a 23-year-old man from Kent was also arrested but has since been released on conditional bail as enquiries continue.

Police Step Up Nighttime Patrols to Keep Partygoers Safe

Detective Inspector Richard Gibson reassured the public: “We do not believe there is any wider risk to the public in connection with this incident.”

He added that officers will be out in force this weekend, patrolling pubs, clubs, and restaurants to spot potential offenders and protect vulnerable individuals.

Safer Nightlife: Council and Police Team Up

Gibson also revealed how local police and Portsmouth City Council are working hand-in-hand to make nightlife safer. Venue staff and door security are trained to recognise signs of abuse and help vulnerable customers.

“If you feel unsafe or vulnerable, please speak to venue staff, security, officers on patrol, or street pastors in the Guildhall Walk area on Friday and Saturday nights,” said Gibson.

There’s also a Safe Space provided by the South Central Ambulance Service at the Civic Offices, opposite the Guildhall, open from 10pm to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
