Three Arrested in Rochester Crackdown on Stolen Cars and Worker Exploitation
Police swooped on three metal businesses in Medway City Estate, Rochester, cracking down on stolen vehicles and worker exploitation. The multi-agency blitz on 7 April 2021 saw three arrests and nine warnings handed out.
Illegal Bar and Shocking Living Conditions Uncovered
Officers, supported by Medway Council, HMRC, Environment Agency, Kent Fire and Rescue, and the Home Office, uncovered a hidden illegal bar breaching Covid-19 rules. They also found workers – including two young children – living in appalling, unsuitable conditions.
Medway Council’s Housing Team slapped nine Emergency Prohibition notices on the businesses. If ignored, these could cost the firms up to £30,000 in fines.
Arrests in Drug and Theft Probe
- A 55-year-old man from Strood was arrested for stolen car theft and possession with intent to supply cocaine and cannabis.
- A 50-year-old man, also from Strood, was nabbed on suspicion of cocaine supply.
- A 63-year-old Rochester man was arrested for handling stolen goods and carrying an offensive weapon during a vehicle stop in Rainham.
All three suspects have been released but remain under investigation.
Police and Council Vow to Keep Up the Pressure
“This was a pre-planned operation involving key agencies. We will continue to take the toughest action against those involved in offending,” said Sergeant Ross Haybourne from Kent Police’s Medway Community Safety Unit.
A Medway Council spokesperson added: “Those exploiting workers often engage in other crimes. We’re determined to identify and stop them.”
