Thousands of Women May Miss Out on State Pension Boost

Thousands of Brits, especially women nearing or at State Pension age, could be losing out on extra pension cash. The culprit? Gaps in their National Insurance (NI) records caused by missing Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP). HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is now urging everyone to check if they’re entitled to claim more during Pensions Awareness Week.

The Missing Millions: Who’s Affected?

Parents who claimed Child Benefit before 2000 might have incomplete NI records. Why? Because HRP wasn’t properly applied if you didn’t include your National Insurance number on your claim. HRP was designed to protect pension rights for those who had caring responsibilities between 1978 and 2000 but was replaced by NI credits in 2010.

If you missed out on HRP, it could seriously dent your State Pension payout. HMRC and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are teaming up to track down those affected and encourage claims for missing HRP.

What You Need to Know

  • The State Pension depends on your National Insurance record.
  • Missing HRP could mean your pension is lower than it should be, especially if you took time off work for family duties.
  • HMRC has already contacted over 257,000 pensioners possibly missing HRP and will continue reaching out.
  • You can apply for missing HRP online or by post in about 15 minutes.
  • If you’re already over State Pension age and were missing HRP, you could get backdated payments too.

Don’t Miss Out – Check Your State Pension Now!

If you claimed Child Benefit between 1978 and 2000, it’s worth checking your NI records today. People can use an online checker to see if they’re eligible for HRP.

Exchequer Secretary James Murray said: “The State Pension is the foundation of support for people in retirement. We urge people to check their National Insurance records to ensure they receive the pension they are entitled to.”

Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds added: “I encourage anyone who thinks they are missing out to check their eligibility and apply for Home Responsibilities Protection. A few minutes today could make a significant difference to your retirement.”
